Abstract
Introduction: Childhood obesity is a complex health condition that has increased by more than 300% in children aged 5 to 9 over the past 20 years. Its presence is associated with the development of chronic diseases both in childhood and adulthood, thus posing a significant challenge to public health. Objective: To assess Brazilian scientific production on the multicausality of childhood obesity and the public policies implemented to combat it. Method: In order to delimit the scope of the study, the PICo strategy for non-clinical scenarios was used. Thus, the following guiding question was established: What are the risk factors for the development of childhood obesity, and which public policies address the problem? The keywords obesity, child, and public policies were used as a research strategy in the BVS and SciELO databases from 2018 to 2022. Results: A total of 112 articles were found, of which 13 were selected. The complexity of multicausal factors, including family dynamics, breastfeeding duration, commercial interests, body image disorders, and knowledge about healthy eating, were the main findings of this study. Furthermore, it was observed that few studies comprehensively address the phenomenon of childhood obesity, particularly in the context of public policies. Conclusion: The complexity of the multicausal factors of childhood obesity is evident; therefore, bringing to the forefront the discussion of intersectoral public policies becomes essential.
